Irma + Alejandro: A Vow Renewal Planned in Less Than 60 Seconds

I previously wrote about a couple that threw their nuptials together in less than 24- hours (link to blog post here), and I thought that would be my wedding planning personal best. Oh how wrong I was! Here’s how my day transpired into an on the fly 25 year vow renewal:

On the Saturday evening of April 22nd I was exhausted and comatose on the coach in a scrolling stupor from a whole day's interaction with humans. My day was thus:

6 AM: Rise and Shine

6:30 AM: Drive to Morning Brew Kailua to meet a couple whose wedding I will be officiating next month, in-person (which is always a delight considering most individuals are coming here for a destination wedding and I meet them via video or phone).

7:00 AM - 8:00 AM: Respond to emails and other business housekeeping.

8:00AM - 8:30 AM: Met aforementioned couple and planned out their wedding vows.

9:15 AM - 10:45 AM: Taught my aerial yoga class at Breathe in Kaneohe.

11:30 AM - 3:30 PM: Marketing meeting at Yoga Collective Oahu.

4:00 PM - 5:30 PM: While an ambivert, this much talking and interacting was a lot! I also had no time to eat and was running off of: a small iced mocha, coconut water, banana chips, and peanut butter pretzels. I proceeded to make myself some avocado toast and skimmed through hundreds of lofi covers to make my Taurus Season playlist for my yoga classes.

5:45 PM: Drake (my partner in life and business) guilt trips me to come on a photo shoot with him. While I usually love getting better at my own photography skills (see our All Inclusive Package in which I stay after the ceremony and help you get some candid shots) I was in no mood to attend. Somehow I managed to peel myself off the couch and away from Tik Tok to put on pants and headed over to the beach with Drake to take some photos.

6:00 PM: I immediately get distracted by Rupert - a local dog that we often see at the neighborhood beach we were shooting at. Perfectly comfortable chit chatting with Rupert’s father and getting quality pets in - I had no intentions of leaving this spot until it was time to go.

6:05 PM: Drake runs over and tells me his couple need an officiant NOW. I think this is a ploy to get me to leave and help him. I rush over thinking this can’t be happening - but it is. There is Irma - gorgeous in her original wedding dress from her nuptials 25 years ago and her husband just beaming with excitement. I performed their vow renewal in jeans, no makeup, and wet hair pulled back in a bun. I spoke from the heart, they said some loving words in Spanish to one-another, and we all cried. It was the best day.

So often I see couples get really stressed out over the planning part of the journey - that the ceremony just becomes the end goal that they want to get over with. It becomes a testament to the magnitude of stress you endured and the whole point is forgotten: to declare your love and commitment to the love of your life. It’s not about saying the right words, making things absolutely perfect, or controlling every detail.
