Crouching Lion is one of my favorite places on the island. Nowhere else will you get such a stunning view as a backdrop for your love story. For the couple that has bonded over their shared love of adventure - there is nothing more romantic than this short (but steep) incline to one of the most beautiful spots in the world. While most people aren’t woefully underprepared for the physical challenge there could be more tips and tricks out there to make your elopement at Crouching Lion a little less stressful. So I’ve boiled down 3 tips for your Crouching Lion Elopement that you probably haven’t thought of.
Recently I had to decline an elopement at Crouching Lion because I will be off island for Design Camp (Yes design camp - it’s basically adult summer camp but for graphic designers. I’m not a graphic designer, but my friend Rachel is and she told me it’s the best kept secret. I’m very much looking forward to a weekend full of crafts.).
As I found myself declining but felt compelled to share what I consider to be 3 very specific tips for their Crouching Lion Elopement.
This is by no means an all encompassing list - but I think it gets couples thinking about parts of the hike that they wouldn’t necessarily think about before. The usual FAQS include things like “How hard is the Crouching Lion Hike?” or “What should you pack for your Crouching Lion Elopement?” So here it is - the top 3 off-the-beaten-path answers for questions you didn’t know you had - and you’ll never have to have because I’m answering them for you.
Crouching Lion Elopement Tip #1: Plan Your Outfits Accordingly
This isn’t to say you can’t have a ballgown at the top - if you want to lug it up there then GO FOR IT! This isn’t to say your dress has to be short or simple - nah, wear what you want when you get to the top to change! This isn’t even about what athletic wear is the easiest to hide under your dress when you change at the top (my vote is always a white biker short and spaghetti strap white top that you can easily slip your gown over).
This is about how much your body will change during the hike up!
It is going to be a quick hike (geographically speaking we aren’t covering much distance) but it’s going to be a steep one (topographically it's a doozy)…and you will sweat, you will get hot, and this will all only be amplified by the hot, humid weather of Hawaii.
It doesn’t matter what size you are, you will expand. How much - well that depends - but expansion will happen!
Do you need to go up a size? Probably not. Just make sure the fabric has some give or when altering leave a lil room. I myself have busted 2 zippers and I've had 3 brides have a wardrobe malfunction - so this isn’t a one-off tip!
Bonus Tip: Carry some safety pins for added measure!
Crouching Lion Elopement Tip #2: Flower Crown for Wind Prevention
Invest in a flower crown because it is windy!!! The flower crown is great to combat the wind because it is usually harsh out there (think less windswept and ethereal and more shards of hair sticking straight out from your head).
I have yet to find a hairstyle that I think looks appealing on myself that can withstand the wind and the hike. If you are the girl who loves the slicked back low bun - perfect - no worries skip ahead to tip #3, but if you’re anything like me and want that romantic hair down…well… that’s a bit of a pickle.
The best accessory I have found is the flower crown. When I make flower crowns for my clients I ask you what colors and style you prefer so it fits your desired look for your adventurous ceremony.
If this is really messing with your desired aesthetic for the day - just wear it during the ceremony. The last thing you want is the stress of your hair beating you in the face and now you are crying because you took a strand in the eye and not because you are marrying the love of your life at the top of a majestic mountain in paradise…
Once you get into the more stylized photos - take it off and work with your photographer to get the perfect shot. That's the appropriate time to get those locks in order.
Bonus Tip: You can wear the veil - but again, save it for the stylized photos if it is long or extra windy, so you aren’t fighting it while trying to place your fiance’s ring on their left finger without it rolling down a mountain…
Crouching Lion Elopement Tip #3: It’s the DETAILS!
This tip goes for all my couples - but think of the details! The details make it meaningful, make it special, and are downright fun to shop for or make (if you’re crafty like me and attend Design Camps).
Bring a small bottle of champagne or sip a Kona Big Wave at the top! Maybe get matching backpacks (one couple decided it was time to upgrade and the bride got a really cute white North Face Backpack to celebrate). Grab some baseball hats with your anniversary embroidered on them!
You’re eloping. You’ve already cut back on your to-do list by at least 90%. Really all you have to do is:
Book the photographer
Get someone to make it legal
Decide on location
Get something to wear
That’s it! That’s all the steps to eloping really. The rest are details - and details are so much fun!
